The oil industry has lost 200,000 jobs in the oil price downturn since mid-2014. This is the largest job loss in the industry, since the oil price slump in 1997-98. Meanwhile, the renewable industries, solar, wind and hydro-electric are expanding and hiring more people than in the past two decades. “The boom in new green jobs is being led by Asia where governments in countries such as China and India are embarking on massive programs to use more renewable energy.” The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reported that employment in the renewable industry increase by 18 % in the past year. Most of the new jobs are in Asia.
