Mexico's state-run oil company, Pemex, confirmed Monday that there was an accident on an oil platform at one of its major operations in the southern Gulf of Mexico, but has not described the impact. The platform, Akal-H, is part of the Akal field complex on Cantarell field. The explosion, reported by local new media, was caused by an oil and gas leak occurring while three workers were performing routine inspections. The workers were evacuated, and no injuries were reported. Akal-H was uninhabited and operated remotely. The explosion is the third high seas incident at Pemex this year, an accident on a rig in the Bay of Campeche killed two workers in May, and four people were killed in a fire on a platform in the Abkatum Pol Chuc complex in April.
