Jeff Chanton, Florida State University says he has located the landing spot of the "missing oil" from the Macondo oil spill in 2010. The U.S. government and BP have spent millions of dollars trying to determine where the oil disappeared to or if it was dissipated naturally. Up to 10 million gallons of crude oil (10% of the original spill) may have settled to the seafloor. Using sediment cores and Carbon 14 analysis the Florida State team has mapped the sink area of the oil spill. The oil will be slow to decay in the anaerobic environment on the sea floor and may impact marine life for years to come.
