The employment situation for the oil and gas maritime industry may be reaching a "perfect storm" condition in the next three to five years. "In the United States, demand for skilled/technical labor continues to increase in an industry seeing less and less graduates and adequately trained new career professionals entering the workplace. An aging workforce, technological advancements, changing environmental and safety regulations, growth in offshore energy production in the Gulf of Mexico, and the expanded Panama Canal will all impact the business." In the next 10 years over 50% of the maritime workforce will retire. In April a report by the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry gave a dire warning if training, recruitment and retention of the workforce is not increased—a generation gap of technical knowledge.
