Navy and Maritime Shipping Officials Increase Security in Red Sea and Gulf of Aden

As the fighting in Yemen continues to escalate, attacks on military and marine transport vessels are expected to increase and officials have put the area on a High Security Alert. The first missile attack on Oct 1 targeted a UAE military ship, a 2nd attack on Oct 9 targeted a U.S. Navy vessel. Commercial vessels, including oil shipments, traveling the Bab-el--Mamdeb Strait are potential targets. The U.S. Navy warned commercial vessels in the area to be aware of the threat from missiles, as well as “waterborne improvised explosive devices and to maintain the farthest possible distance from the coast of Yemen.”
