New Assessment of the Mancos Shale Sparks Controversy

Oil and gas industry groups in Colorado are requesting that the BLM revise and republish the EIS for the Thompson Divide area issued in February 2016. In June the U. S. Geological Survey announced that 66 trillion cubic feet of natural gas exists in the Mancos Shale formation in the western U.S., an estimate over 40 times higher than previous estimates in 2003. The EIS issued by BLM earlier in the year does not include the Mancos resource in the Thompson Divide area. Industry groups are demanding that BLM reopen the public process in light of the new assessment of the Mancos. The USGS assessment was based largely on research in the Piceance Basin in western Colorado.
