Utah’s oil shales contain over half the country’s bitumen resources estimated at 20-32 billion barrels of oil. Developing that resource has been a controversy because of environmental issues from water to fracing. U. S. Oil Sands has developed a process for extracting the oil from oil sands this uses a biodegradable citrus solvent and avoids tailings associated with oil sands processing methods used in Canada. The company says the process recycles 95% of the water used making it much more environmentally acceptable. The process returns clean, dry sand to the sites where oil sands are extracted giving the reclamation process a small footprint.
