Rogue Wave Prediction

Researchers at MIT have developed an algorithm tool that rapidly sifts through data from surrounding waves to identify clusters of waves that have the potential to develop into rogue waves. The algorithm can predict rogue waves in the vicinity of offshore platforms or ocean going vessels and give the operators a 2-3 time span to shut down essential operations and prepare. The key to understanding rogue wave formation was the recognition that they form from unique clusters of waves that develop across wide reaches of ocean. The prediction method will require “ships and offshore platforms will have to utilize high-resolution scanning technologies such as LIDAR and radar to measure the surrounding waves.”
