On Monday, May 16th, TOTAL announced the opening of a huge new gas plant to be located in the Shetland Islands on Scotland’s west coast. The goal is to bring gas from the Laggan-Tormore fields in the North Sea to the closest possible processing facility. The Shetland Gas Plant is heralded by Amber Rudd, the minister for energy and climate change in London as a “vote of confidence” in the recovery of the North Sea oil and gas industry. Production from the Laggan-Tormore fields is 500,000 cubic feet of gas per day and is expected to last for 20 years. Natural gas from the new plant will provide 8 % of the UK’s daily needs and boost the economy of the Shetlands.
