Wind Generation in Federal Waters Moves Forward

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEMO approved the first wind energy research project in Federal Waters off Virginia. Wind energy research is part of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan. The plans call for installation and operation of two 6-megawatt turbines on the Outer Continental Shelf off the Virginia coast. The electricity generated by the turbines is expected to provide power for 3,000 homes. Virginia Governor, Terry McAuliffe said the project is a “gateway to commercial development of offshore wind”, and will “support efforts to build a new Virginia economy.” Dominion Resources, Inc. will install and operate the wind turbines.
