Project Objectives

This project is focused on identifying and evaluating the best approaches for the measurement and analytical characterization of the following waste streams and potential impacts associated with unconventional gas development: a) air emissions from fracturing fluid ponds, with a focus on accurate continuous monitoring; b) stray gases in water wells, with a focus on the development of a consistent and defensible approach for identifying the true source(s); and c) produced water, with a focus on real time measurements in the field (i.e. at the well site). The identification and verification of protocols for the sampling and testing of these media will facilitate the development of appropriate regulatory action (if any) and management practices for the mitigation of waste streams and potential impacts associated with shale-gas extraction. In addition, these protocols will enable industry to comply with environmental regulations and reduce public concerns associated with safety and environmental protection during gas shale development.
